Davey St Bridge

completion: Design Development 2009

location: Kananook Creek, Davey St Bridge, Frankston, Victoria, Australia

Our design was selected from a number of entries invited by the Frankston City Council.

Holding on to the original structure, this design is somewhat timeless and natural in its origins. It seems to have taken root underneath the bridge, so much so that it is difficult to tell what came first. The bridge or the ribs that now encase it.

The idea's the artwork conjures in the viewer are twofold; it appears as something natural and as part of its immediate surroundings. On closer inspection this idea starts to change as the bridge reveals itself as a man-made structure, an engineering feat. And then the design grows. It curves around the bridge like the ribs of a boat, or the bones of a whale, the curl of a wave, even the windswept form of Ti tree.
